BUXTON QUARRY ARCHIVE

Part 1 Year 3 Semester 1

Paras pro toto

A series of three archive hubs each tell a different story from a different era of quarrying.
The archive is like a bookshelf, visitors pull out sliders from the elevation of the building in order to gain access into the exhibitions inside.  The number of sliders correlate to the refinement of the industry and the capacity of the industry through time - the hub holding information from the 1800’s has fewer sliders, allowing space for more physical artefacts. The archive is constructed of weathered steel, and limestone - with an intricate weighted sliding system to allow the pieces of the building to move out into the public space creating interaction with pedestrians.

"The story of quarrying is in many ways the story of Buxton."
(Christie, 2015)
